Capacity is realistic loadable volume, not the theoretical cube. Max legal cargo is for a standard chassis under U.S. DOT federal limits (80,000 lb gross combination, 34,000 lb tandem axle) with no overweight permit. A pallet position is one floor spot — stackable cargo can double the pallet count.

How these numbers work

The U.S. Department of Transportation caps a tractor-trailer at 80,000 lb gross combination weight, 34,000 lb on a tandem axle and 20,000 lb on a single axle. Max legal cargo is what is left after the tractor, the chassis and the container’s own tare weight.

On 20′ equipment the tandem axle limit binds before the gross weight limit does — that is why a 20′ takes less cargo than a 40′ even though the box itself is rated stronger.

Every figure on this page assumes a standard day-cab tractor and a standard chassis, with no overweight or tri-axle permit. A heavier tractor or chassis lowers what you can load, and some states enforce axle spacing more tightly than others. Confirm the weight with us before you commit to a booking.

Five more feet of floor than a 40’HC. The road weight limit is lower than a 40′ — the box is heavier empty and rides on a longer wheelbase — so this is the right call when your cargo cubes out before it weighs out, not when it is dense.

Six inches wider inside than a standard 45′. That is the difference between fitting two 48″ pallets side by side and having to turn them — the biggest floor-plan upgrade available. King Ocean does not carry this box; Seaboard and Crowley do.

Published door height is 1″ taller than the interior height. On a reefer the clear height is limited by the machinery end, not by the door — so a piece can pass through the doorway and still not stand up at the front of the box. Confirm with us before planning a tight load.

About these figures. Dimensions and weights are typical values published by Seaboard Marine and Crowley for their own fleets, cross-checked against ISO 668 and container-lessor specifications. Individual containers vary by manufacturer, build year and condition — tare weight in particular varies unit to unit, which affects your VGM declaration. Capacities and pallet positions are realistic operating figures and depend on your cargo’s shape, piece count and stow pattern; they are not a guarantee.

Limits vary by state, chassis type, axle configuration and load distribution. Overweight and tri-axle permits raise these limits — ask us.
